In addition to the 36 people killed in the two attacks here, the number of people wounded increases to 46 as doctors and medics say at least 35 of those injured are in a critical condition.

A day after the first attack, when two trucks were rammed through the gates of the international airport and ran head-on into the terminal, a second deadly attack left at least one of the two trucks wrecked and the second one burning. Both of the attackers were killed by the security forces.

The violence comes as the Haitian government has been trying to deal with a long-simmering internal struggle with gangs and drug traffickers over control of the country’s cocaine fields.

“It was a very intense battle,” said Colonel Jean-Claude Desgroseilliers, who led the security forces. “We were very, very lucky.”

In addition to the 36 people killed in the two attacks here, the number of people wounded increases to 46. Some were injured while trying to escape the blasts, while others were trapped in the trucks and badly burned.

Police told reporters Friday that eight people had been arrested, including three men believed to have been involved in the deadly attacks. No one has yet been held over the attacks, officials said.

After the first explosion, the driver of one of the trucks tried to flee but was arrested outside the airport. Shortly thereafter, a truck carrying 20 cars of police officers on their way to the airport exploded, injuring as many as 14 others.
