(10/10/16)

Iga Swiatek beat Jule Niemeier at the 2017 US Open to advance to the fourth round of the WTA Championships. The 19-year-old lost the first set, but won 7-6 (5-7) in the tiebreak, then took the second set, serving for the match when Niemeier double-faulted out of an easy opportunity.

The 19-year-old Iga, the 2015 Wimbledon runner-up who upset No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki in 2015, was making her only appearance at a WTA Championship since 2014. Her mother, Iga’s mother, also served as a coach for the young Pole, as did her father, Jan Swiatek.

Swiatek started with a straight-set victory, defeating Russian Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1. The victory came after she had trailed 1-0 in the sixth game before serving at 40-30. She also defeated No. 25-seeded Karolína Plíšková 6-2, 7-5.

Swiatek defeated No. 26-seeded Alize Cornet 6-1, 7-5 at the 2017 US Open.

Swiatek, a native of Plzeň, outside Prague, was seeded 29th at the US Open. She was seeded 12th with her compatriot Polona Hercog.

Iga Swiatek will now face the third seed in the tournament, No. 23-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Polona Hercog 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth round on Wednesday. She will face third seed Garbiñe Muguruza, the 2016 Wimbledon runner-up, or No. 20
