Gal Costa, legendary Brazilian singer, has died at age 77.

No details of the cause of death have been released and no national funeral will be held.

The singer began his career in the 1970s as a child prodigy, signing a publishing deal at nine years of age.

In an essay for the Guardian, Brazilian writer and professor Daniel Martins praised the singer who he considered one of the best of his generation.

“The most important thing in the young generation is this idea of not knowing what you don’t know,” said Martins.

“It’s like giving up on your future. But for the time being, we’re taking care of us, as a generation. There is something beautiful in that. Something very good.”

The singer had been suffering from health problems for several years and it was reported that he was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year.

He had been receiving treatment in Brazil since last August and had recently undergone cancer surgery.
