Simona Halep Suspended for a Positive Doping Test
The reigning French Open champion is reportedly suspended from the event for a doping test.
Simona Halep has been suspended for a doping test ahead of the French Open, according to various media outlets. The news comes just a day after she was declared the winner of the tournament, winning a marathon five-set match against Garbine Muguruza 4-67, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3.
“The Doping Control Panel announced today that Simona Halep will be suspended. While there are no grounds for disciplinary action, the consequences of a positive doping test are that she not be allowed back in the competition venue and be suspended for one year. No further details are available,” said a tournament official.
Halep has not commented on the suspension.
According to the French Open, two samples from the player were sent to a laboratory to be tested.
The tournament president has called the testing, along with the player’s immediate resignation from the tournament, “absolutely absurd.”
Simona Halep, the number one ranked tennis player in the world, announced Wednesday that she would not compete in the French Open for a potential suspension after it was revealed that two of her urine samples had tested positive for the banned substance EPO.
The second sample of Halep was sent to an independent medical laboratory for analysis on April 26.
